-Culture Shock-

Ice-Breakers:

• Identify someone you would say is “killing it” (i.e. doing extremely well; destroying the competition), and why that is so.

Questions:

1. Read Acts 18:1-3; Philippians 3:4-8; 1 Corinthians 15:9

  • How did Paul make a living?
  • Why did Paul choose a livelihood that differed from his training?

2. Corinth was a city that had unprecedented wealth and was uber-competitive, hyper-sexualized, status-obsessed, religiously pluralistic, un-tethered from tradition, proud, self- sufficient, striving, anxious, and spiritually empty.

  • In what ways is Corinth similar to our culture today?

3. Read 1 Corinthians 1:1-3

  • To whom did the Apostle Paul address this letter?
  • The Corinthian church was very much a reflection of the culture of their city (see description above), and Paul is going to strongly exhort them about their shortcomings in this letter. However, with what tone does Paul begin this letter and why?

4. In the book of Corinthians, Paul addresses the following subjects... religious pluralism, multi-culturalism, human divisiveness, a fractured society, extreme sexual activity and scandal, the Holy Spirit, speaking in tongues, prophesying, gender roles, how men and women are to relate to each other in the church and in the home, how to pursue spiritual growth, and how not to quarrel, grumble or be greedy.

  • Which of these do you think is the most relevant to be addressed in the church in America today?

Application:

• What is an area of your life where you may appear to be “killing it” (i.e. doing extremely well; destroying the competition) but you are not?

• During any given day, what (or who) competes with Jesus to receive your best efforts, attention, and commitment?

• How will you seek to reconcile the pressures of our society to seek wealth and status with the Apostle Paul’s call to follow Jesus wholeheartedly?
