Don't Believe Everything You Hear_Blog

Dignity or Commodity?

Pastor Bryan made the observation that women are often viewed as commodities in our culture. What evidence have you seen that supports this? Have you seen this cultural belief creep into your own mindset? If so, how?

  1. Read John 13:34-35. What is new about this commandment? Share an example of how Jesus treated women differently than all the other men in the 1st century. [For examples, see the Samaritan woman at the well (John 4), the woman caught in adultery (John 8), the “sinful” woman who anointed Jesus with perfume (Luke 7:36-50), etc.]

  2. Read Matthew 5:27-30.

    • At what point does noticing or admiring the physical beauty of a woman turn into lust?

    • The Jews (including Jesus) often spoke in hyperbole (exaggerated speech for the sake of emphasis). Clearly, Jesus was not intending for men to literally cut off or gouge out parts of their body. So why do you think He spoke so strongly to these self-righteous individuals who thought they were good enough to earn favor with God? (also read Matthew 5:20-22; Matthew 5:48).

  3. Read 1 Peter 3:7. Men are clearly called to treat women with honor. Why do you think this is difficult for many men? Is it difficult for some women to respect themselves or other women? Who do you know that does this right?

  4. One way that Bryan encouraged us to behave differently is to eliminate certain music from our playlists. What are some other actions you could take as you strive to be more honoring toward women?

  5. What are the 3 lessons that the “school of porn” teaches men to think about women? Why is erotic imagery so dangerous? If men neglect to deal with their addictions to these images, how will their present and future relationships be impacted?

  6. I Timothy 5:1-2 says: “Treat... older women as mothers, and younger women as sisters, with absolute purity.” How would this mindset change the way you think about, talk about and treat the women you encounter in life?

Jesus’ call to treat women with esteem and honor can seem old fashioned or counterintuitive. However, if we want our dating and marriage relationships to thrive, it’s a truth we can’t ignore. What is at least one thing you can do this week to honor the women in your life?
